Ariff Akhir is a musician, songwriter and music producer. Ariff runs Purple Sound Productions and when not performing as a solo singer-songwriter, he sings and plays guitar for The Sofa Sessions.
Ariff had his start in music when he joined an acoustic blues band as singer and guitarist while studying in the UK in the 90’s. The band performed at university functions and live venues including a slot at an annual local music festival in Canterbury, Kent.
After graduating with a law degree from the University of Kent at Canterbury, Ariff returned to Malaysia and in 2001, he began performing solo at events in and around Kuala Lumpur. He formed The Sofa Sessions in 2004 and the band have since performed at events such as Rock The World 7 at Stadium Merdeka, Mont’Kiara Jazz and Rhythm Fest, After Hours 2 at the Singapore Esplanade, Urbanscapes, Starbucks Music Series and Fete De La Musique.
The Sofa Sessions released an EP, Five Songs, in 2006 and are currently working on a full-length album while regularly performing at pubs, restaurants, live music events and private functions.
Nobody Else, a song performed by The Sofa Sessions which Ariff co-wrote, was featured as the theme song to Levi Jean’s Valentine’s Day promotion in 2007. When I Am King, written, produced and performed by Ariff was included in the Voices From Next Door compilation album in 2006. Take Me Home was featured in The Actors Studio’s Life Sdn Bhd 5:I’m Positive! theatre production in 2009, Squares & Circles in Life Sdn Bhd 7:Refugees (2011) and Empty Eyes in Life Sdn Bhd 8:Human Trafficking (2012).
Apart from music that he has written for The Sofa Sessions and his own solo material, Ariff has had songs he composed recorded by a Japanese rock band in Tokyo, he wrote and produced the music to Roslan Madun’s traditional song, Patin Temerloh, for Pahang’s state tourism campaign and he also composed and arranged the music for The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre’s Malaysian Girls musical.
Ariff started his own music production and audio recording business, Purple Sound Productions, in 2006 and, as the principal producer and audio engineer, has arranged, produced and engineered music for local artists, advertisements, theatre, film, television and new media.
A selection of Ariff’s audio production credits include mastering for TV3’s LG Mystarz Season 2 music competition television programme, Troubadours’ Voices From Next Door compilation album and Junk Magazine CDs vol. 1 - 9; mixing and mastering for Dewangga Sakti’s Mabok Kepayang EP and Mohar’s Alunan Sufi album; production, mixing and mastering for Shanon Shah’s Suara Yang Ku Dengar album, Meor’s Yang Terlintas Di Fikiran, Azmyl Yunor’s Warga, Roslan Madun’s Puisi Tradisional, Sohaimi Mior Hassan’s Suatu Hari Nanti, Ian Chow’s Issue #01, the original cast recording for the Malaysian Girls musical and the music soundtrack to Tanjung Aru Pictures’ film, Karaoke; and live sound engineering for The Actors Studio’s Paper Crane musical.
